The lots run deep, so the detached garage, rear gate and back door are often nowhere near the street address and are reached from the alley rather than the front. Several older grid neighborhoods, among them Alkali Flat and Boulevard Park, are designated historic districts, and doors there can still carry original hardware: a mortise or rim lock, its body set in a pocket cut into the door edge rather than a bore.
