Locks and doors in Sacramento

Sacramento's central city is a lettered-and-numbered grid, and most older residential blocks are split lengthwise by an alley. The lots run deep, so the detached garage, rear gate and back door are often nowhere near the street address and are reached from the alley rather than the front. Several older grid neighborhoods, among them Alkali Flat and Boulevard Park, are designated historic districts, and doors there can still carry original hardware: a mortise or rim lock, its body set in a pocket cut into the door edge rather than a bore.

Before You Call

Have your exact address ready, including any alley or rear access if that applies -- many older Sacramento grid blocks are reached from the alley rather than the street. Know whether any key exists anywhere, and have identification plus something linking you to the property or vehicle: this is asked before any lock is opened, without exception.

Common questions

Do you cover every neighborhood inside Sacramento?

Yes, mobile, across the city.

Our house in the grid has an original mortise lock instead of a deadbolt. Can that be rekeyed, or does the door have to be re-bored?

Usually it can be rekeyed in place. Most mortise locks take a threaded cylinder that screws into the lock case and can be removed and repinned to a new key without disturbing the knob, escutcheon or case. Some pre-war doors instead have a bit-key mortise lock, which has no pin cylinder and cannot be rekeyed that way; those need a cylinder fitted or the unit replaced. Either way, the door does not have to be bored for a cylindrical deadbolt.
