A motorcycle key usually does two mechanical jobs at once, the ignition and the fork lock, and on many models built since the mid-2000s it also carries a transponder the same way a car key does. Losing it is a different job from losing a car key mainly because of the equipment involved, not because the underlying problem is different.
What the job involves
- Cutting a replacement key to the ignition and fork-lock profile
- Programming the transponder on models that carry one, where the equipment supports that make
- Originating a key from the vehicle when no working key exists at all
- Checking whether the fork lock and ignition still take the same cut, which is not universal across makes
What to have ready when you call
- Year, make and model, and the VIN if you can reach it
- Whether any key exists anywhere, including a spare that may be with a dealer or a previous owner
- Where the motorcycle is, since it is usually easier to bring the key to the bike than the reverse
- Registration or title showing the vehicle is yours
Honest limits
Not every make and model can be serviced the same way. Some manufacturers restrict transponder programming to dealer-only equipment, and where that is the case you are told before anything is attempted rather than charged for a procedure that cannot succeed on that specific model.

Common questions
Do all motorcycles have a chip in the key?
No. It depends on the make, model and year. Older and simpler ignitions use a plain cut key with no electronics at all.
Can a hardware store cut a motorcycle key?
It can cut a plain blade in some cases, but motorcycle key profiles are less standard than house keys, and it cannot program a transponder if the model has one.
What if I have no key at all?
In most cases a key can still be originated from the vehicle itself, cut and programmed where the model requires it. Confirmed on the phone with the year, make and model.
